Governors Roll Past Wayne County 9-1 In Opener

William Blount opened its doubleheader with a 9-1 win over Wayne County at Charlie Puleo Field. The Governors got the bats going early and never let up, building the lead steadily through the middle innings before finishing the Cardinals off in the bottom of the sixth.
Mark Sackerman was the name people were talking about. He started the scoring with a two-run home run to right-center in the first inning and later added an RBI groundout that pushed the lead to 5-1. Jackson Maurer also came through with a line drive that plated a run and kept the pressure on Wayne County's defense.
The Governors put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when Noah Hardin drove a ball to center field with the bases loaded, clearing out four runs and ending the game under the run-rule. Wayne County's best chance came in the top of the second when Caleb Sargent's team pushed a run across to make it 2-1, but the Governors answered right back and pulled away for good.
William Blount's pitching held Wayne County to just the one run despite a few early walks, working out of trouble in the first inning to keep the shutout close before the offense took over. The Governors were set to play a second game later that night as part of the doubleheader.
